1) 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

Toyota Tacoma has been redesigned for the 2016 model:

• Toyota adds to the midsize pickup's performance prowess and everyday appeal without drifting too far from its winning formula.

The truck’s 4.0-liter V6 engine has been replaced by a 3.5-liter V6 that delivers 42 more horsepower.

Toyota also includes the excellent new Entune touchscreen infotainment interface.

Toyota includes a revamped interior with an integrated GoPro mount so owners can record their off-road escapades.

These upgrades quickly cement the Tacoma as our Editors' Choice for midsize trucks.

The system has all the requisite features when your phone is paired via Bluetooth. It also has a unique feature we've never seen before: the ability to adjust the volume of an outgoing call. The system also supports text messaging. It will read incoming messages aloud using text-to-speech technology; you can reply by choosing various canned responses.

Performance and Conclusions

Toyota Tacoma's 3.5-liter V6 engine is not more potent than its 4.0-liter predecessor. It's much softer in operation. The interior is better insulated. It is making for a smoother ride. While the TRD Off-Road is designed for rough surfaces. It also makes for a very soft, enjoyable drive.

2) 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is like a punk-rock band. An edgy alternative to more sophisticated, grown-up midsize rivals. Its off-road cred is demonstrated by definitive trail-ready trims and packages featuring rugged equipment and impressive capability.

Toyota Tacoma has exceptional pickup-truck versatility with multiple powertrains. It boasts the most standard driver-assistance features in the class, including automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

Although the Toyota isn't as wholly compelling as the competition, it has the pedigree and practicality suitable for an adventurous personality. An updated Tacoma with additional features will go on sale as a 2020 model.

What's New for 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro?

Toyota makes changes to the 2019 Tacoma. Changes include interior updates and some revisions to the TRD Pro model:

Every Tacoma adds 2 USB ports inside its center console. The rear mirror's compass is removed on versions that have navigation.

Privacy glass is standard on the base models.

The TRD Pro receives a plate with a red TRD inscription

A TRD Pro exhaust with a chrome tip and sunroof includes the exclusive Voodoo Blue paint.

Inside, Tacoma, equipped with the automatic transmission, comes standard with a JBL audio system.

A newly TRD Desert air intake rounds out the changes.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Pricing

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is at its best when it's outfitted to take the foul, really beaten path.

We'd choose the Toyota Tacoma 2019 TRD Off-Road model. This model offers rear-seat space for up to four passengers on an adventure.

Its V-6 engine teams with an optional six-speed manual or an automatic transmission.

The manual requires you to order a four-wheel drive, but it's better than the automatic, which can be selective in how it shifts.

Other standard equipment on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road includes a tuned suspension with off-road shocks, and an electronically locking differential, and an infotainment system with a 7.0-inch touchscreen

Neither engine is quick or refined

V6 can be ordered with a manual transmission

Automatic transmission is best avoided

Can tow up to 6800 pounds

Toyota Tacoma's V-6 engine makes decent performance and towing muscle. The base four-cylinder is best avoided and underpowered. We advise steering clear of the persnickety six-speed automatic transmission with either engine; stick with the six-speed manual and the V-6. We are anchored by the automatic, the six-cylinder struggles at times.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport is oriented toward city driving, whereas the TRD Off-Road and the TRD Pro versions seek rougher paths. Still, none of these choices are rapid.

Toyota Tacoma tows up to 6800 pounds with rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel-drive versions pull 6500 pounds.

Toyota Tacoma has good brakes. But the brake pedal in the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is so touchy even when you barely apply it. This is disconcerting in traffic.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Fuel Economy

The V-6 Tacoma's fuel economy ranks in the middle of the pack. But it falls short of more efficient competitors in our real-world highway testing. Manual transmission has the worst fuel economy. The Tacoma matched its EPA highway estimate of 23 mpg in the fuel-economy test. Still, this was five mpg less than the Honda Ridgeline and the diesel GMC Canyon.

                              dislikes

Durable cabin materials

Disappointing storage space

Straightforward switchgear

Missing desirable features

Standard touchscreen infotainment system

The rear seat is tiny for a crew cab

The functional materials and layout are of a different era. The absence of power-adjustable seats is disappointing. Even the higher trim levels rely on hard plastics and minimalistic materials. Cramped quarters are a staple of Tacoma. Toyota Tacoma Double Cab's rear seat is where passengers in Toyota Tacoma have to squeeze because legroom is abysmal.

We need more modern features like Apple CarPlay, mobile hotspot, and Android Auto.

The touchscreen has a glossy black bezel. The menus are easy to read. The system recognizes voice commands very well. The quality of phone calls is excellent.

Unfortunately, calls don't continue via Bluetooth once you turn off the truck. But at least they're transferred to the phone instead of being dropped altogether.

Load up the cargo bed but leave your suitcases and small items at home. Toyota Tacoma has more than enough volume in its five-foot or six-foot bed, but it disappoints with few storage cubbies and limited carry-on space inside. Storage capacity is restricted inside the Tacoma, and the Double Cab we tested could only hold nine carry-ons in the back seat. Despite the center-console bin, there aren't many storage bins or cubbies. The door pockets are tiny for anything substantial.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Safety Features

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has average crash test ratings. But it has one of the most standard driver assists among rivals.

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Tacoma's warranty coverage aligns with most rivals. Toyota offers the best complimentary scheduled maintenance plan in its class.

  • The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles.
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles

2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Engine

The engine is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder.

The engine is 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque.

V6 fuel mileage is the same as the four-cylinder. But it's more powerful and smoother.

The V6 with a 4WD gets an EPA-rated 18/23 mpg City/Highway, or 20 mpg Combined.

The manual gearbox drops mileage by two miles per gallon, while two-wheel drive improves it by one.

The four-cylinder can tow 1620 pounds, while the V6 is rated up to 6800 pounds. A package includes a heavy-duty oil and transmission cooler (with the automatic), a 130-amp manual, and Trailer Sway Control.

Off-road capability and durability are a big part of Toyota Tacoma. Its Multi-Terrain Select system is similar to Land Rover, Jeep, and Ford systems.
